Welcome to Maths at Portsdown Primary School and Early Years!

Below, you’ll find links to a range of resources to help children, parents and carers.  Below, please find a copy of our calculation policy which helps explain the models and methods used in each year group.  After this are links to our long term overviews from our Hampshire Maths scheme which explain when we teach each year’s objectives. If you need some help learning about some of our maths vocabulary we use here at Portsdown, the next document is a glossary that can help explain the terms.  Following this is a link to NRICH, a website full of great maths investigations, challenges and games.

Maths in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS):  the Nursery and Year R

Maths in the Nursery and Year R is a key part of the ‘Mathematics’ area of the EYFS Curriculum (although there are also key links to the Communication and Language area of the EYFS Curriculum). Within the provision at Portsdown Primary School and Early Years, the children in EYFS will be immersed in language appropriate for their age concerning number and shape and space. They will be supported to subitise, count up to 20 and will know that the last number reached when counting a small set of objects tells you how many there are in total (‘cardinal principle’) with opportunities to explore these in different ways and using a range of concrete resources, including formal maths equipment such as Numicon alongside informal e.g. subitising the number of leaves in a group etc. They will explore measures and different shapes through a range of practical activities and opportunities and will be supported to describe the position and movement (under the table) as well as using the language of first and next to describe time’s passing.
