Updated Sept 2020 Information to parents



Dear Parents,


We  are looking forward to welcoming back all year groups on Thursday 3rd September. Below is some very important information for you so please read it carefully.


We are going to be running year group bubbles with staggered drop off and pick up times in order to support social distancing.

*Year R will be part time for 3rd and 4th September and then full time from 7th September


You will need to:

  • Ensure you arrive at school on time and wait on your allocated drive
  • Wait for classroom doors to open (These will not be opened until the stated time)
  • Ensure that your children are waiting with you and that you are supervising them. They should stay with you when waiting to go in and after you have collected them.
  • If you are picking up your child at the end of the day, you should wait on your allocated drive.

Parents are not permitted to walk along the front of the classrooms or enter the building without a prior appointment.

Only 1 adult from each household can drop off or collect a child/children.

Children in Year 5 and 6 only can walk home alone if a ‘Walking Home’ letter has been filled in. These should be in your child’s report.



All children are expected to attend school every day and the Government have instructed schools to fine parents for non-attendance. Here at Portsdown we want to work with you. If you are struggling, please let us know. You can phone the school and we will get back to you.


If your child is going to be absent for any reason you will need to call us as soon as possible on 02392378991 (Option 1) with a reason so that it can be recorded.

Children arriving late

If you know that you are going to be late, please phone us to let us know on 02392378991 (Option 2) If your child is going to be late and requires a packed lunch, you must let us know by 9:10am.  


If your child is late then they will need to come up the middle drive where a member of staff can assist. You will not be able to take your child to their classroom.


For the first half term we will only be providing packed lunches which the children will eat in their classroom. We will review this after a few weeks to see if we can reintroduce hot meals. The menu can be found on our website and a copy has been placed with your child’s report.


Children are welcome to bring in their own packed lunch to school. Those who are entitled to free school meals will be provided with a packed lunch upon request. All children in Year R, 1 and 2 will have the option of a free school packed lunch. For children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 you have the option of purchasing a packed lunch.


For safety reasons, we are encouraging all payments to be made electronically. Most parents do this already. Within the report we have included details of how to set up an account using the online payment system. You will be able to order and pay for school meals in advance using this system. Let us know if you have any difficulty.


On the rare occasion you have to pay by cash, there will be a staff member from the front office available to receive your payment. You will need to count out the money in front of them and place it in an envelope with your name on it. We can provide you with an envelope if you do not have one.


We are strongly encouraging everyone to use the online ordering and paying system as it is safer.


What to bring to school

Children should only bring essential items to school. For example, nursery children may want to bring spare clothes and nappies or a bag for their packed lunch. Children can also bring a healthy snack for break time such as a banana or apple.


Children can bring in their own small bag only if they need to. They should not be bringing in anything form home that they do not need.


Book bags and Reading books – Children can bring a book bag to school and we intend to allow children to take reading books home. In September we will communicate with you how we can do this safely.


Children should not bring:

  • a bag if they do not need to
  • any toys, games, scooters or bicycles to school
  • any chewies or fidget toys
  • multiple jumpers or coats
  • unhealthy snacks for break times such as chocolate or sweets
  • any cakes for birthdays or special events


If they do, we will ask you to come and collect the items. 


Water bottles

We will provide water bottles for every child which we will fill up in the classroom. They will have access to this water at all times. If children bring a drink from home, it will only be available to them at lunchtime.



All children in the main school are expected to be in school uniform everyday which includes black shoes or trainers, dark grey or black trousers or skirts, white polo top/shirt and a red jumper or cardigan.

Please ensure that you have labelled everything and the children do not wear any jewellery apart from small studs in ears.

PE Kits

Children should bring in a full PE kit from the start of term which will stay on their peg. PE kit is plain shorts, white top, trainers or plimsolls and your own supply of micropore tape for ear studs.


Parental contact

Please ensure that we have your latest contact details. We will need the names and numbers of at least two different emergency contacts and your current valid email address.

If we have a positive case of Covid-19, we will need to get hold of you immediately.

Staff contact

You currently have access to class teachers’ email addresses. We will continue with this access for a trial period in September. We will send out expectations of how this will work in September.

Breakfast Club and after school clubs

Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer any after school clubs to begin with. We will review this at the end of September.


Breakfast club will only be open for key worker children and some vulnerable children. These are mainly the children who are currently accessing the service. Children will need to arrive between 8am and 8:10am (late children will not be permitted).  To maintain bubbles, we will not be able to open it up to every child. We will review this at the end of September.

After dropping off or picking up

After you have dropped off or picked up, please can you leave the area as soon as possible. For safety, we need to ensure that we do not have any large groups of adults on the school site.
