Year 4 Priorities for Autumn 2

Maths: Times tables

Please login to Times Tables Rockstars at least 3 times a week to help practise your times tables. This is to help us prepare for upper school where it is very important to know our tables. We will also likely be completing a national Multiplication Check in June.  Every child has an individual target to practise. Please contact your child's teacher if you need the login details again.

 

Reading: Fluency and understanding

We want to help children develop their fluency (speed) when reading and understanding of what they read. We are using Accelerated Reader in school to help give children books that are the right challenge level for them. The children will refer to this as their 'dot' or 'colour' book. Once they have read the book, sometimes at least twice if it is a shorter book, they then complete a quiz at school to earn points. The more they do this, the more this supports their fluency and understanding. You can support this at home by reading with them and discussing the main events of the story. 

 

The children also then choose a book from the library to read for pleasure. This book maybe too hard to read individually so is the perfect chance to sit and share a book together!

 

Writing: Using spelling strategies when writing

As the children get used to writing at length again, we've noticed that many of the spelling strategies that have been previously taught have been forgotten. We really want to get children using these again to improve the spellings in our work. These include:

  • Sounding out the word
  • Breaking the word up into syllables before sounding it out if it is a longer word
  • Using rhyme to help remember spelling patterns
  • Trying different spelling patterns to see what looks right

 

You can support this at home by reminding children of these strategies and getting them to have a go, rather than just giving them a spelling if they're not sure.

Children receive spellings every Friday and are then quizzed the following Friday.

Please practise with your child at least 3 times a week to help them succeed.
